Challenge the Highest Peak in the Chugoku Region: Authentic Peak Hunting & Science-Based Nature Observation
~ The dynamism of an elevation of 1,510m. A premium trek walking through a pseudo-alpine ecosystem and an extreme forest created by heavy snowfall ~
Price per person JPY22,500
Tour Overview
Towering on the border of Tottori and Hyogo prefectures, Mt. Hyonosen (Elevation 1,510m) is a renowned peak famous as one of "Japan's 200 Famous Mountains" and the "Highest Peak of the Chugoku Highlands." It offers an overwhelming scale and a sense of accomplishment upon summiting, continuing to fascinate authentic mountaineering enthusiasts (peak hunters) from all over the world, including Taiwan and South Korea.
This tour goes beyond a mere peak hunt (summiting). Based on the latest biodiversity survey and monitoring data conducted by the Tottori Liaison Council for Nature Conservation Instructors, certified guides will unfold deep explanations incorporating scientific evidence. "Why can plants similar to an alpine zone be seen at this altitude?" "How has heavy snow deformed the trees?" This is an intellectual, premium trekking tour that unravels the miraculous ecosystem created by an extreme natural environment while climbing.

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS
Status of Conquering "Japan's 200 Famous Mountains" and Overwhelming Views
From the summit of Mt. Hyonosen (1,510m), which boasts one of the highest elevations in the Chugoku region, a 360-degree grand panorama spreads out, reaching all the way to the Sea of Japan. For hikers aiming to conquer famous mountains, we provide a day that will become a shining achievement along with a summit certificate.
Academic Institution Collaboration: Evidence-Based "Science Guiding"
In collaboration with the Tottori Liaison Council for Nature Conservation Instructors, we reflect the findings of biodiversity monitoring surveys into the tour. While incorporating vegetation survey data, we provide specialized yet easy-to-understand nature explanations regarding climate change and conservation activities for endemic species.

Observation of Unique Vegetation Born from a "Pseudo-Alpine Zone" and Heavy Snow
Because Mt. Hyonosen receives fierce winds from the Sea of Japan and some of the heaviest snowfall in Japan, an environment of a "pseudo-alpine zone" similar to 3,000m-class high mountains is formed despite its 1,510m elevation. We scientifically unravel the ecology of distorted beeches (deformed trees) bent drastically from their roots by snow pressure, and the rare alpine and subalpine plants unique to Mt. Hyonosen.
Exploration of High Moor "Koseinuma" and Japanese Yew Communities
At "Koseinuma", a high moor spreading slightly down on the Hyogo prefecture side from the summit, you can observe an ecosystem unique to moors, different from other areas. Furthermore, if you extend your trip towards San-no-maru, communities of Japanese Yew (Kyaraboku), representing Mt. Hyonosen, spread out, allowing you to witness the strength of plants surviving in a harsh natural environment.

Detailed Itinerary
-
08:10 | Tanpi Station (Wakasa Railway) - Free Shuttle Departure: Meet the driver at Tanpi Station. Enjoy the idyllic mountain scenery as you head to Hatto Furusato no Mori (approx. 20 minutes).
-
08:30 | Hatto Furusato no Mori - Orientation & Transfer: Meet the guide, equipment, and condition check. Orientation on the course overview and perspectives of scientific observation (monitoring points). Transfer to the trailhead by car.
-
09:15 | Start Climbing: Into the Heavy Snow and Beech Forest: Pass through a community of "snow-pressure deformed beeches" whose bases are bowed due to the weight of heavy snow. The guide will scientifically explain snow depth and the morphological evolution of trees.
-
11:15 | Ridge Line / Observation of the "Pseudo-Alpine Zone": Head to the open bamboo grass fields and ridgeline, similar to the timberline. Based on survey data, learn about plant communities unique to wind-beaten areas and climate factors.
-
12:45 | Mt. Hyonosen Summit (1,510m) Arrival / Summit Lunch: Enjoy lunch while taking in the 360-degree grand panorama. If conditions are good, you can see all the way to Mt. Daisen and the Sea of Japan. We prepare an onigiri (rice ball) bento made with rice grown with running water from Mt. Hyonosen. A "Summit Commemoration Certificate" will also be awarded at the summit.
-
13:45 | Descent to Koseinuma (High Moor) & Observation: Descend from the summit towards Hyogo Prefecture and observe "Koseinuma," a high moor with a unique ecosystem different from others.
-
14:45 | Exploration of San-no-maru and Japanese Yew Communities: Extend the walk towards San-no-maru and observe the Japanese Yew (Kyaraboku) growing in clusters enduring the harsh environment. Explanations will also be given on the geology supporting the habitat of large mammals and rich biodiversity.
-
16:45 | Return to Trailhead / Review & Return to Hatto Furusato no Mori, then Dismissal: Cool down after descending and review the data and records observed today. Information on nearby hot spring facilities, etc.
SCIENCE SPOTLIGHT: WHAT MAKES MT. HYONOSEN UNIQUE?
Wind-beaten, cold-adapted plants that are typically seen at elevations above 2,500m on mountains on the Pacific side can be observed around 1,300m on Mt. Hyonosen. This is due to a miraculous microclimate created by strong winter seasonal winds from the Sea of Japan and an overwhelming amount of snowfall.
The Mystery of the Pseudo-alpine Zone

Beeches and Japanese water oaks (Mizunara) that have endured several meters of snow pressure for decades grow robustly even as their trunks distort into a "J-shape". This mechanical adaptation of trees and changes in forest structure have garnered extremely high attention in recent academic surveys.
